Get your sneakers ready, head out on the pavement ... it’s time for the Fourth Annual Harvest for Hope 5k non-competitive walk/run event, of which Oro Valley|Marana magazine is proud to be the title sponsor. The free event — entry is a bag of non-perishable food, which will be donated to Catalina Community Services — is an important reminder of the many Northwest Tucsonans that go hungry each day. In 2008, more than 5,000 pounds of food was raised along with $7,100 in sponsorship dollars that went directly to CCS. Organizers are hoping to double that figure this year.
The 2009 Harvest for Hope 5k will take place at Riverfront Park (551 Lambert Lane) on Saturday, October 3 at 5 p.m. The first 500 walkers/runners that register will receive a t-shirt and all finishers will receive a medal. To register, visit Harvest4Hope.org and enter on-line, pick up an entry form at the All About Running and Walking in the Rancho Vistoso Safeway Plaza, or register at the event.
Gather your own goods or purchase pre-bagged food at the Trader Joe’s store at 7912 N. Oracle Rd., beginning on Wednesday, September 30 through Saturday, October 3.

The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council is now the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance. In 2009, GOVAC has grown into a more relevant and streamlined organization dedicated to partnering with each of the Southern Arizona governments, organizations, and with the local business community and individuals establishing a solid and sustainable multicultural arts foundation for years to come.
Under its new name, the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, the organization will consistently support artists and communities in the region and maintain the quality programming, innovation and creative cultural expression that GOVAC has become know for. “What it ultimately means for Oro Valley is more arts, not less,” says Kate Marquez, executive director of SAACA.
Also, by reclassifying the organization, it will now qualify for larger grants and foundation monies that will allow for future sustainability. According to Marquez, “A more global reach will immediately qualify us for more and larger grants.”
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance can now be found at SAACA.org.

Swimming pools can be a lifesaver during the hot Tucson summer but they can also pose a serious threat to small children. But with some proper education, young children can learn to help save themselves should they ever fall into a pool while alone.
The Infant Swimming Resource, which, for the past 40 years, has successfully provided self-rescue skills training to more than 175,000 infants and young children with a 100 percent safety record, is now offering classes in Tucson’s Northwest communities.
To sign up for the six-week program, contact an ISR representative in your area at 520.572.8865.
