The Old West is alive and kicking — at least the food is, and you can find it at the Steak Out Restaurant and Saloon in Marana.
As its name suggests, Marana Steak Out is aimed at carnivores — beef, pork, lamb and chicken fill the menu — but there’s also fish, salads and vegetarian offerings. The restaurant serves many favorites, such as filet mignon, ribeye and New York strips, T-bones, Porterhouse, prime rib and Kansas City strips. “Steak is the number one dish,” says Michael C. Wystrach, general manager. Mesquite grilled pork loin also has a loyal following, as do the lamb chops and barbeque chicken. “All our foods are made in-house, including our barbeque sauce and salad dressings. If we’re putting it on your plate, we cooked or made it for you.”
Steak Out Restaurant and Saloon opened in February in a 7,200-square foot freestanding building, which seats 140 in the dining room, another 75 in its barroom, and 40 more on the patio. “There’s a 250-foot wide natural easement behind our property and our patio faces that beautiful landscaping and the wonderful views of the mountains,” Wystrach says. “When we moved in here, everything clicked for us very well.”
Marana Steak Out is the sister location to the family’s flagship location in Sonoita, the Steak Out. The Sonoita Steak Out has been in existence, and in the Wystrach family for 50 years. When the family was seeking a location for a second restaurant, son Michael C. says he was golfing at a Marana course when he noticed the space for lease. “We went over the demographics of the area, which were what we were looking for, so I called a buddy of mine who is the leasing agent on this center and we negotiated for the space.”
“The Marana area feels like Sonoita, which is a town where people moved because they enjoy the country and the rural way of life,” Wystrach says. “Marana is an old ranching town like Sonoita where people appreciate the country and western lifestyle, and that’s what we’re all about.”
There are very few times at Marana Steak Out when something isn’t going on. This includes early bird specials during the week, happy hour (4 to 6 p.m.) and reverse happy hour (9 to 11 p.m.), karaoke night and other deals. There isn’t a single night that you can’t find something to do or something on special.
Thus far, the response from patrons has been positive. “People have been great,” he says. “We’re in an area that desperately needs restaurants, and while a lot of people think this economy might not be the best time to open, it’s right for us. People are looking for quality at an affordable price. If they are going out to eat, they want a good experience, great food and a good bang for their buck. That’s what we give them.” That, and a taste of the old West.

The Steak Out Restaurant and Saloon in Marana, also known as Marana Steak Out, is located at 3620 W Tangerine Road. 520.572.1300.
