The first thing you realize when you step inside the Club Car showroom at Golf Cars of Arizona in Catalina is they leave off the “t” for a reason. These vehicles are not the carts that most weekend duffers are familiar with. Rather, they are battery-powered mini cars, known at Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) that can be driven on the road just as easily as on the golf course. And that’s exactly what thousands of Tucsonans do with them. “People buy them because they’re fun and because they’re economical,” explains Linda Hoffman, who co-owns of Golf Cars of Arizona with her husband Rick Smith.

Club Cars, the only manufacturer that Golf Cars of Arizona carries, are street-legal machines that can reach speeds of 25 mph, and come standard with headlights, tail lights, blinkers, rack and pinion steering, independent suspension, self-adjusting brakes, and seatbelts. Like other vehicles, the more money you throw at it the more you can make it your own. Interested in a fully-enclosed cockpit with a faux wood-grain dashboard, automotive seating fabrics and trim in any color of the rainbow, and many that aren’t? You can have it. Or how about one with heating, air conditioning, folding windshield and chrome wheels? Check. Or maybe a cooler, golf ball and club cleaner, divot repair sand bottle and solar roof to keep stops for recharging to a minimum? They’ll do that too.

That’s exactly what keeps Golf Cars of Arizona’s staff busy since  Hoffman and Smith purchased the company nearly 17 years ago. “Ninety-nine point nine percent of people customize their car,” says Hoffman.

Golf Cars of Arizona operates three dealerships, two in Tucson and one in Green Valley, employing roughly 30 people. The couple purchased the company after they left their jobs in the automotive industry, Hoffman as a lobbyist for automotive after-market parts manufacturers and Smith as an after-market parts salesman. This experience has helped enabled them to be more proactive about what’s going on in the golf car industry than most other dealers. For instance, when solar roofs first hit the market, Golf Cars of Arizona did their own quality testing before ordering for their stores, only purchasing those they deem worthy. “We try to understand what’s going on in our industry, we don’t just wait for things to happen and react,” says Hoffaman.

With recent tax incentives that can take as much as $4,100 off the price of a new golf car and annual costs around a couple hundred dollars, NEVs might just be the ultimate green vehicle for closed-community residents. Just don’t call it a cart.
